Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. (Southern ladies organizations and southern schoolchildren had decorated Confederate graves in Richmond and other cities during the Civil War, but each region had its own date. Most dates were in May.) By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
“The brave die never, though they sleep in dust:
Their courage nerves a thousand living men.” — Minot J. Savage, Decorating the Soldiers’ Graves
It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half mast from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is combined with Jefferson Davis’ Birthday in Mississippi.
Memorial Day has become less of an occasion of remembrance. Many people choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend. This day is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events. For the fashion conscious, it is seen as acceptable to wear white clothing, particularly shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day. However, fewer and fewer people follow this rule and many wear white clothing throughout the year.
“Are they dead that yet speak louder than we can speak, and a more universal language? Are they dead that yet act? Are they dead that yet move upon society and inspire the people with nobler motives and more heroic patriotism?” — Henry Ward Beecher
“Is’t death to fall for Freedom’s right?
He’s dead alone who lacks her light!” — Thomas Campbell, Hallowed Ground
“Alas, how can we help but mourn
When hero bosoms yield their breath!
A century itself may bear
But once the flower of such a death.” — Silar Weir Mitchell, Herndon
“The patriot’s blood is the seed of Freedom’s tree.” — Thomas Campbell, Stanzas
“And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave.” — Joseph Rodman Drake, To the Defenders of New Orleans
“Blow out, you bugles, over the rich Dead!
There’s none of these so lonely and poor of old,
But, dying, has made us rarer gifts than gold.” — Rupert Brooke, The Dead
History: Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis’ birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.
Priscilla Chan has long been known as the girlfriend of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, but on last Saturday she updated her status to the billionaire’s wife. Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan are finally married after dating on and off for nine years, since the couple’s Harvard days.
The bride wore a $4,700 Claire Pettibone dress… but all eyes weren’t on Priscilla Chan’s wedding gown: they were on Mark Zuckerberg’s suit – proof the man does own something other than a hoodie. The facebook founder married his girlfriend of nine years this weekend in a surprise ceremony in his backyard.
iPad Mini rumors have emerged on the web. Some Chinese tech websites are reporting that a smaller version of the iPad, meant to compete with upcoming Windows 8 tablets, will be released later this year. The price range for the mini iPad would start at around $250. Only time will tell whether or not this rumor is true. Apple’s previous CEO, the late Steve Jobs, previously slammed the idea of a small iPad. Here are some leaked iPad Mini photos for you all,
Apple launched its latest version of the iPad on Wednesday, armed with a Full HD display with 3.1 million pixels and a supercharged new processor.
The device will be available on March 16 and priced from $499-$829 (£399-£659) – the same range as the iPad 2, which the technology giant launched a year ago.
The tablet will be powered by a super fast quad-core A5x chip, putting Apple’s tablet ahead of competitors such as Samsung.
It will also offer a high speed 4G LTE network connection in territories with 4G – in the U.S., it will be available on both the AT&T and Verizon wireless networks.
A tale of two iPads: The new Apple iPad (left) is shown next to its predecessor, the iPad 2 (right) at a launch party at Kings Place, London.
The weight is going up from 1.33 pounds to 1.44 pounds for the Wi-Fi-only model. The original iPad weighed 1.5 pounds.
Apple also confirmed that the new model will come in a version that can use Verizon Wireless’ and AT&T Inc.’s ‘LTE’ wireless broadband networks.
At last! Apple CEO Tim Cook introduces the new iPad during an Apple event today in San Francisco.
Apple claims the battery lasts 10 hours and the device is just 9.4mm thick.
‘Who will come out with a product that’s more amazing than the iPad 2?’ Apple CEO Tim Cook asked the audience at the San Francisco launch event. ‘Stop wondering – we are’.
The screen, a larger version of the screen in iPhone 4s, is sharper than most 40-inch HD televisions.
Apple claims that the screen resolution is so sharp words on screen are sharper than words in print.
Mr Cook said: ‘We are taking it to a whole new level and are redefining the category that Apple created with the original iPad’.
The new iPad also offers a 5 megapixel iSight camera which can record video in full HD.
Apple showed off new apps, including new versions of it’s iWork apps such as iPhoto.
Many apps showed off the power of the new tablet – for instance editing 14 megapixel digital photos in full size on screen.
The processor is fast enough to handle a 3D game, Sky Gamblers, with 50 fighter planes battling on screen at once.
A new version of the hit iPhone title Infinity Blade showed off graphics similar to Xbox 360 and PS3.
A fresh edition of the GarageBand music software lets four iPads ‘jam’ together via Wi-Fi. Also, a newer version of iMovie allows users to record and edit full HD movies right on the screen.
The iPhoto app allows photo editing direct on screen, cropping pictures, editing lighting and adding effects such as red-eye reduction and black and White filters via the touchscreen.
The new iPad will be 9.4 millimeters thick, or 0.37 inches.

Samsung has officially unveiled its seventh Android tablet – the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, which is the first to come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich from day one.
The Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) will be one of the first tablets available with Ice Cream Sandwich, which has a haltingly beautiful design and tons of new features like facial recognition unlocking that make using Android elegant and fun. The Galaxy Tab 2 will join Samsung’s diverse family of tablets like the Tab 8.9 and 10.1, which compete the best they can against Apple’s iPad, the most popular tablet in the world.
Like the original Galaxy Tab P1000 and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, the Galaxy Tab 2 has a 7 inch display with 1024 x 600 pixels. Measuring 193.7 x 122.4 x 10.5 mm and weighing 344 grams.
One of the big selling points of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 will be that it’ll come running Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) straight out of the box come March. The Galaxy Tab 2 we fondled was sometimes laggy to unlock or while booting up the hubs but on the whole, the 1GHz dual-core processor (and 1GB of RAM) coped just fine with Ice Cream Sandwich-flavoured multi-tasking.
Now Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 has three easily accessible hubs – Music Hub, Reader Hub and the new Video hub, to launch you into your digital world. The Video hub has 1000 movie and TV titles to rent or buy and we reckon it’ll easily take on similar entertainment offerings from Sammy’s competitors. Plus the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is one of the first tablets to get in on ‘allshare play’, Samsung’s entertainment-sharing set-up.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2’s 3MP rear facing camera takes surprisingly decent snaps with fairly realistic colours, though we should point out that it’s hard to be an exact judge under the unflattering lights of a convention centre. There’s also a VGA snapper on the front that’s good enough for video calls.
Following are the summary of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2’s features:
* TouchWiz / L!ve Panel UX
* HSPA+ 21Mbps (850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz)
* Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct
* A-GPS
* Bluetooth v 3.0
* 3.5mm headset jack
* USB 2.0
* Samsung Hub
* Samsung ChatON
* 3MP rear camera
* VGA front-facing camera
* 1GHz dual-core processor
* 1GB (RAM)
* 8 / 16 / 32GB user memory
* microSD (up to 32GB)
* 4,000 mAh battery
The New York Giants beat the New England Patriots on Sunday by a score of 21-17 in their second meeting in the past five Super Bowls. The Giants previously beat the Patriots in the 2008 contest. Inspired by their dynamic quarterback Eli Manning, the Giants erased an eight-point third-quarter deficit to steal the victory with a last-minute touchdown from Ahmad Bradshaw in a stunning repeat of their last Super Bowl win, also against the Patriots, four years ago.
“The greatest feeling in professional sports is to win the Super Bowl,” said New York’s Tom Coughlin, who at 65 became the oldest National Football League coach to win a Super Bowl. “What a wonderful experience it was to see the team come together like they did.”
Eli Manning’s efforts in yesterday’s Super Bowl XLVI, New York Giants star Eli Manning was not only awarded with the Most Valuable Player title but a brand new 2012 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible Centennial Edition as well.
“It was a great game with two great teams,” Manning said. “We played to the very end. There were some big plays being made.”

Lawrence Tynes kicked two field goals then Manning mounted an 88-yard drive, that included a spectacular catch from Mario Manningham, before Bradshaw scored the winning touchdown with just 57 seconds left on the clock.
“You don’t feel good after you lose this game,” said New England head coach Bill Belichick. “It was wild out there. Hey, it’s the Super Bowl.
“I can’t fault the effort of any of our players. They played as hard as they could … We could have played a tiny bit better. It was obviously a very competitive football game.”
It was a game that lived up to all the hype and expectation as the two teams slugged it out in front of a crowd of nearly 70,000 people and an expected record television audience.
